The essence of the problem
Human error accounts for the majority (approx. 60%) of arc faults. These include switching errors and poor work organisation.
The most effective way to protect both personnel and equipment against arc faults is the use of advanced arc flash protection systems that detect arc light.
Key factor - short-circuit duration
Arc short-circuit duration = flash detection time + logic time (performed by the protection controller) + tripping time by the circuit breaker.
Arc fault duration = detection time + logic processing time (protection relay) + circuit breaker tripping time
In the arc flash protection module, the tripping signal sent to the protection relay is generated in less than 5 ms. The relay logic time (10–50 ms) and circuit breaker operating time (25–50 ms) must also be considered.
Total clearing time below 100 ms ensures effective protection of human life and health and significantly reduces equipment damage.
Optimising the protection relay logic is crucial to achieve the fastest possible fault clearance.
Every 10 ms reduction in response time significantly improves safety.
