"Is the use of the phrase 'unstable RES sources' appropriate? - paper presented at the XXV SPIE Energotest Conference

A paper was presented at the XXV Conference "Electricity Automation in the Age of Transformation", entitled. "Is the use of the phrase 'unstable RES sources' appropriate?", prepared by: Mariusz Talaga - SPIE Energotest Sp. z o.o. and Adrian Halinka - Silesian University of Technology.

We are pleased to announce that this paper won I place in the competition for the best conference paper, selected on the basis of votes of the event participants.

The publication undertakes a critical analysis of the popular but ambiguous term "unstable RES", which - despite its frequent appearance in the literature - is sometimes used in different temporal and technical contexts. Such simplifications may lead to inaccurate assessments of the impact of renewable energy sources on the operation of the power system.

The authors propose to clarify the terminology used and to apply an analytical approach that better reflects the actual characteristics of the operation of RES sources. The paper focuses particularly on the short-term observability of the operation of these sources, using indicators based on voltage, frequency and power measurements.

The solutions presented in the paper allow, among others.:
✔ more effective monitoring of grid operating conditions,
✔ increased situational awareness of operators,
✔ early detection of irregularities in the operation of RES sources.

The study also includes actual measurement data for a small-scale renewable installation, which further emphasises the practicality of the proposed approach.
